War, Peace and Recovery

Hi folks, Joe here.

This piece is going to be focused on the current war between Iraq and the United States and its allied forces. Now I am not going to sit here writing this on a Thursday night and tell you what you should believe and where you should stand on the issue of supporting the troops.

That's for another forum somewhere in Suite101.com land. My want is to focus on how all this stuff affects recovery work.

For me -- a media junkie -- it's like I want to know this and that and this and that. Yet I have reached the point where my recovery, I feel, may be suffering in the sense of me not doing my Step work. This is tough to say yet is my truth. I've been a slacker here lately.

Finding peace in the middle of mayhem is one of the great quests men, women and children undertake in 12-step work, therapy, etc. There is a great hope, though, to look at for peace, serenity and grace.

The Spirit within each of us offers a comforting sense of peace. It is hard to settle down enough to listen to that Spirit ... whether that is a still, small voice for you and I or looking at spring flowers, birds chirping and new life sprouting all around.

One of the statements attributed to Jesus of Nazareth goes something like this: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. For I do not give unto you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." I'm sure that there are similar words of wisdom in the Holy Scriptures, Tao, Torah or other spiritual books.

War is hell. Peace is great. Recovery is bliss.

I want all of us to experience peace in minds, hearts, spirits and souls all around the world. What a wonderful world it would be if peace, grace, humility, honesty, healthy relationships and honoring the brotherhood of man were a reality.

Call me Pollyannish. Call me crazy, too! ;-)

I hope you all have a bliss-filled time after reading this articie.

Grace and peace,

Joe
