Are You A Recovering Christian? Plus my interview with Jesus Christ.
Public schools, we were told, sacraficed Christians to Satan, drugs were served for lunch, and PE was an orgy. We had to show our thanks that we were safe in our school built upon God's Love. And because we were Christians we could expect storm troopers to burst into our homes and execute us if we owned a Bible. We we told if we didn't stand up for ourselves and God, and the Christian way of life, God would reject us, which was more of punishment than any jail or form of torture.
Being me, this didn't make much sense because this was the United States of America and in our Constitution wasn't there this nifty little clause that said "Freedom of religion?" My teachers assured me that Satanic forces were at work and that clause would be ripped out of the Constitution that afternoon and I'd better show the police my Bible when I got home, because the police had a list of True Christians they were told to execute. Needless to say, I was afraid to go home, afraid to go to school, and my mom wouldn't allow me to play outside because of "people who'd grab me" so I had that fear. My childhood was filled with nothing but fear. I had insomnia, stress, and worry on a continual basis.
Every day we had to show signs of the coming rapture. Each day the rapture didn't happen the teachers grew more depressed.
We were graded upon how many times we went to church and Sunday school.
I guess there was enough detachment at home from this religious tyranny that on the surface it didn't affect me much. In our family, women were in charge of spiritual matters while the men could stay home and watch football. My mom left the spiritual matters to the school, so I'd go to my Dad for the church questions. He had an outsiders view, seemed logical and reasonable to me, and was more experienced in the world. I'd tell him about things the school said about Jesus and God and he'd tell me, with brillant logic, that they were wrong. Turns out my dad was right. My Dad explained to me free will, and who does man think he is to say that the Indian in some uninhabited part of South America was wrong by worshiping a tree next to a stream? If God made
