What about the Veterans?

As I watched the news this morning, I reflected on the cost of Peace. President Bush must make decisions on 100 million dollars (can you think that High !!) of aide to Belgrade. American citizens are held in China, troops are scattered all over the globe and vets are in need of care.

I am an amputee; ever so often I must have a prosthetic device (leg) repaired. Sometime they just replace it because of the cost factor. In a recent trip to the prosthetic clinic to gain repairs I asked that they install a shock to my leg. This small device adds about $500 to the cost of this repair. I was told that they did not have the funds to allow this. Well, if they can fight other nations battles, send billions in aide to other countries, and spend untold money on human rights violations to persons who are not even citizens of the US, how can they turn down a request for a mere $500? I really do not understand! While at the prosthetic shop having a fitting of my new socket, I came to here a conversation about another vet who was having golf spikes put on his shoes.

I was shocked to find the VA was paying for golf spikes, yet would not pay for a little comfort for my poor old back. You see, I have a real high tech leg and the one being repaired is what I call my bathroom leg. I just wear it around the house because it is much easier to put on and take off. Never the less, I do wear it a lot. And my high tech leg has all the bells and whistles to allow me some function. The old leg is just no tech. So, while being repaired I thought it would be nice to get a little cushion in it so it does not jar the old bones so.

Boy, was I wrong.

As I labored over the thoughts of an article 99 (remember the movie??) I thought of all the people, vets and non-vets that have made this country the best in the world. Sure there are many things wrong. Just look at the Civil Rights movement of the disabled in this country. 10 years of law and still I can’t find a parking space at Wal-Mart…. Anyway, there are thousands of persons in this country who can not get medical attention, medications and other help just because the Great Old United States must send bizillion’s of bucks off shore to help everyone else??
