It is Time to Wake Up, America

As our country begins to celebrate another 4th of July, I ponder and reflect on the wonderful song my wife asked me to find for her this morning.

In February of 1863, Julia Ward Howe wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Have you ever listened to or read the words and seen the meaning? "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." Notice that did not say: "He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored." Whom is the Lord trampling? "He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword." Seems He is the focus of this battle. "His day is marching on." What, pray tell has happened to His Day?

"I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps." Is He still watching over us? Moreover, why should He? "They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps." What kind of altar are you worshiping? "I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps." When was the last time YOU read His sentence? "His day is marching on."

"I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel." Did you read the Book today? "As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal." Oh, without His grace, where are we? "Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel," We have stopped the Hero, it seems to me. "Since God is marching on." Is God still America's God, or have we replaced him with seven men in Washington, D.C.?

"He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat." But, are we still in the battle? "He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat." Oh, friend, I hope He does not give America what it rightfully has coming. "Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!" Which way are we running? "Our God is marching on."

"In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea," Do you believe that? "With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me." His Glory above your glory. "As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free." America seems to like to fight anywhere in the world, except at home! "While God is marching on. Glory, Glory hallelujah. Glory, Glory hallelujah. Glory, Glory hallelujah. Our God is marching on."

Is HE still our (as in America) God? If I did not know better and want to believe it, I would have to look around at our system and say we have driven God out of our lives.
