Rambling On

Got a call the other day from a person who had just lost a leg in an automobile accident. She wanted to know what was going to happen to her. After an hour or two, she had a grasp on the in and outs of this wooden leg thing. You may ask, why did he use the term wooden leg? Well, there is a simple explanation. The attitude of the general public is so distant from the truth that it is hard to get through to people. It is like they are still in the dark ages when artificial limbs (prosthetic devices) were made out of wood.

Did you now that dear old George Washington, the first President of these United States, had wooden teeth? Do you know anyone that has wooden teeth today? I really doubt it. Today prosthetic teeth, yes dentures are a prosthetic device, are made from plastic compounds that are strong and durable. No more wooden teeth for me, now that I know that! Any way back to the legs. No longer are the days when a prosthetist hollows an old oak or hickory log to make a socket.

Today, the prosthetist carefully molds a cast of the residual limb (stump) and forms an exact duplicate in some form of high tech plastic. What has that to do with wooden legs? Well back to the general population. Most of the human race are a kind and compassionate lot. However, when it comes to civil rights, they seem to loose all form of kindness and compassion. How come?

As in my previous article " What a Shame" we come to the conclusion that the only people who loose out are the down trodden. As with the medical profession, the general public tend to be unable to accept the disabled people and keep out of those disable parking places. I was at a store the other day, and as I drove up the Fed X girl pulled up in the disabled parking place. As I walked in the building, I asked her to see her disabled parking permit. Boy, did she give me what for. I simply told her to move the truck. She replied, "As soon as I have finished here, I will be gone." Well, as soon as I finished my business in that store, I will be too. But that is no reason for her to park in the disabled parking space. What a bummer, the attitude of people is like George Wallace during the civil rights movement.
