A Book About MeSmall children love simple things. A little bitty book, a folded white handkerchief, empty cardboard boxes and lots of dirt or sand. The first thing they're ever aware of, though, is themselves. They discover the beauty of their own hand, an ability to make incredible songs and noises. They learn how parents react to their needs and cute ways. It doesn't take long for them to gain the impression they are indeed someone special. And they're right. No loving parent will argue in the negative about their own wonder of creation. This is one reason why books about small children appeal to small children, especially those acting in the same way as themselves.
They are fascinated with who they are and what they do. At a young age this is appropriate and none should try to discourage this natural curiosity. Try to find books which mirror their daily lives. As babies and toddlers my children loved a series of wordless books showing a child involved in activities an adult would find downright boring. One had a bathroom theme and each page entailed the search for a yellow rubber duck. The child brushed teeth, washed, dried and used the potty. There were other books in the series, but my daughter loved this one. My son enjoyed one with a transport theme and the search for a small pigeon. There were cars, prams, bikes and motorcycles. All which featured strongly in our lives at that time. They also enjoyed books about family life. One in particular they had me read over and over. The story was like reading about a day at our place.
All this teaches them to feel secure and loved. You can take this a step further and purchase books which feature your child by name. There are a vast selection of publishers* who specialize in this type of story. Usually, you are asked to provide relevant details. Such as: name of your child, any siblings, best friends, frequently visited places, even names and descriptions of pets. I've provided some here for you to visit online, but this service is also available through mail order and sometimes you might be fortunate to catch a display at a shopping centre. In the lead up to Christmas these publishers will be making themselves more obvious, as the books described make excellent gifts. Keep this in mind for their next birthday, if you prefer.
