Happiness (I)

In this two-parter on happiness, Alison has expressed her opinion for you. I will end each article with some comments.

"As many Hallmark-type cards say, "It's the Little Things." I agree.

Unlike many of the artistic-type friends I have gathered in my life, I am not a dark and cynical person. I'm not saying I'm not jaded-I have been desensitized to just about everything. I also get depressed and down on myself sometimes. But I am nothing like the existentialists and troglidites that have passed through my life. That is because I have the capacity for appreciation and contentment over extremely trivial things. But in my humble opinion, these are the reasons to live. Even if I didn't have Franc, I would still have these things, and I would base my contentment on them.

So, here are a few of my favorite things:

*Love (of course)
*Food-and not just food in general-very specific things about food-
**Steamed-up kitchen windows when something is in the oven, and it's cold outside
**The smell of almond extract
**Garlic and onions
**The feeling I get baking an apple pie with no recipe-because my mom taught me how
**Real breakfast with coffee, eggs, and some kind of fattening meat-and the time in the morning to eat it

*A crisp, autumn day, the sun shining, and the smell of people's fires burning
*The well-tended gardens of my neighbors and workplace-it's gorgeous
*The trees are blazing orange and red, and there's about a million finches and flickers in them, chirping and pecking.
*It's really cold outside, but I am wrapped up in 4 or 5 blankets, and I have a good book to read
*Sleeping on the beach of lake Wenatchee-I have a real view of the summer stars
*the quail have come to my parents' snow-covered deck to feed. I'm home for Christmas, and I have been waiting to see this all year. And they never disappoint me.
*Summer night on a lawn chair watching the fruit bats-there are hundreds of them, and they fly really close to my face, but I'm not frightened.
*After an entire day working on my garden, I have finally finished getting my waterfall right. And now I am sitting in the chair, listening to the water, watching the fish, the bees, the butterflies, the birds, and my cats. I have chosen the flowers for their fragrance, and it's intoxicating.
*Teasing my cat with a tub of Cosmic Catnip.
*Both my cats sleeping against me for warmth
*It's my day off, and I'm watching videos all day!
