The Dreamer's Sweepstakes

I woke up one morning to my phone ringing. Sleepily, I grabbed the receiver.

“Hello”, I answered, wondering who could be calling me at 8am, intruding on my world so early.

“Is this Sharon?” The way too chipper voice on the other end inquired.

“Whose calling?” I asked, ever alert for the relentless bill collectors who thought nothing of rousing me out of bed on a Saturday morning.

“This is the Win Your Dream Sweepstakes! And we are pleased to announce that you have won your Dream Life!” said the voice.

“What the hell are you talking about, is this a joke? I never entered any sweepstakes, and if I did, I sure as hell would never have won...”

“I assure you this is no joke, and you need not be present to enter, someone who loves you very much entered you, and you have indeed won. There are a few things you must do in order to collect your prize though, but it is basically pretty simple. I can tell you what to do and then just come down to the office and work out the details with our travel agent and you will be on your way.”

I sat at the edge of my bed, trying to comprehend what this voice was telling me. There were things I had to do? Only I would win a sweepstakes with strings attached!

“Okay be straight with me, what did I win, and what is this going to cost me?” I said, already having given this voice way more time then the average phone solicitor.

“Sharon”, the voice spoke softly now, this is a real gift to you, and it is being offered today only. We are going to give you the life you have always dreamed of having. The life you deserve. You can live this life anywhere you choose. You will have everything you need to take care of yourself, and be happy and healthy. You will feel loved and fulfilled. You will be empowered and you will never want for anything again.”

“What’s the catch?” I snarled. “There’s always a catch.”

“The only catch is you can only pack one bag to bring with you on your new life, so make sure to only bring the things you need, and you have to find your way to our office today by 12 pm. If you make it to the office at the appointed time, you can meet with the travel agent to make arrangements to get all the information you need to get started with your new life.”
