Land, Lots of Land -- You Can Get It Online

A couple of months ago, I experienced a phenomenon rare in the journalism business: they call it a "vay-cay-shun," or something like that. My husband and I packed our bags and headed for the Texas Hill Country, where I expected to see unspoiled vistas at every turn. Boy, was I wrong.

Most of the unspoiled vistas had become huge bald caliche patches covered with signs reading, "Huge lots! Get yours now! It will only cost you your firstborn child! Gua-ha-ha-ha!!" (Well, they didn't actually say that, but you get my drift.) All that ranch land -- soon to be populated by yuppies.

It seems to me that selling your ranch to a city slicker who wants to build 5,000 homes on it is like selling your soul. It messes with the food supply, the ecosystem and the scenery. And I've never understood why people would move 30 miles out into the country just to live in a subdivision where the houses all look alike and are five feet apart from each other.

Anyway, my rude awakening in the Hill Country inspired me to check out some real estate Web sites to see what there is online in the way of ranch land. My search was successful. I just hope that those of you reading this are looking for ranch land because you want a ranch, not because you want to build a modern-day Levittown in the middle of rural America.

The best site I found was Land.net at http://www.land.net/Home/Index.asp. This site covers 200 countries, so whether you're looking for agricultural land in Bolivia or Wyoming, you can find it here. Land.net lets you search by property type, size and price, among other characteristics, so if you're looking for 500 acres at $1,000 an acre, you won't waste time browsing through listings of $2million parcels.

Another good site is United Country Real Estate at http://www.unitedcountry.com. United Country Real Estate lets you search for properties by location (it's organized by state). Pick your state and an area in the state, and you'll be directed to the closest United Country Real Estate office. And it's completely devoted to rural properties, so you won't waste any time looking through properties that are completely wrong for you.

If you're looking for a much larger listing of real estate agents than I could ever give you, you must visit the International Real Estate Digest site at http://www.ired.com. This site lists real estate agents by country or state and then links you to those agents' Web sites. There's also international news, relocation information and all kinds of helpful hints.
