Wowser! I have to say that leaving the baby and toddler years behind and entering into the young child years with my two boys has been enlightening. I find myself seeing things in a fresh perspective and realize that it is actually the way people would see things when they hadn't been numbed to them. Sound crazy? Consider this:
You and the children are watching TV. You realize that the Disney movie is showing actual punching and kicking into the *villain* or *good guy's* face! Not only are you seeing the sight, it includes real life sound bites as well. Hmmm, how do you explain that to a 4 and 7 year old? If Mom is always saying that hitting is wrong, why do they do it on the Kid's movies? How about this: Watching the favorite weekend fishing or hunting special and it cuts to commercial after commercial of beer or big breasted women selling just about anything. Why is it that shows that interest men HAVE to be connected with beer and breasts? My husband is a big *manly man* type guy who loves to hunt/fish and do outdoor things. He is not waiting for me to finish harping so he can grab a brewski or oggle the playboy bunny that happens to be walking by. Sheesh, how do you explain THAT to two budding outdoor enthusiasts? Even our dinner conversation is quite colorful. We discuss everything from breast enhancement to fake everything on television. I often hear that once you get past the young years, you don't have to watch over your children quite as closely. I believe that as they grow, you have to watch OUT for them even closer! I want to be the one who answers my children's questions and not "Johnny next door". It becomes a little harder to answer them when the answers are not easy but it is also so much more important to listen and respond to your children's questions. They will come to their own conclusions either way, and you want to be sure that they have the right information, not just what sells bodies and beer on television. Go To Page: 1
