Powerful Emotions and Strong Families

An unbelieveable level of emotions have run through our family since the Tragedy. We were scheduled to be married on the 15 and our family dog passed away the very next day. I must say, my emotions were/are extremely fragile and my boys always reflect my emotional moods so things have been in upheaval.

How do you talk to young children about such a devestating event as the WTC attack? How can you not talk about it? We sat down and actually talked about what happened in a younger child's vocabulary and without sounding as if the bombing was happening in our backyard, although we live in New York State and within minutes of the Red Cross central location for the state.

I hear my sons playing *planes crashing* now and that is new. I also hear my youngest son saying that he doesnt want me to die because he would really miss me. He also says he wants our dog to come back.

These past events have added a new facet to our otherwise stable home. The solution? To come together as a family. To show unity AS a family and allow any conversation to be on limits when anyone needs to talk. There have been a lot of off topic conversations and many of them seemingly minor but all of them having a larger purpose.

I have received many emails about little boys who dont seem to want to play sports and their mothers are worried and dads are disgusted. I think that this tragedy could be used as an opportunity to strengthen what is really important in a young boy's life....the ability to express his emotions.
