He Listens!! He Really Listens!!

As I am sure many of you can relate, there are times when I am not quite sure that my son actually hears a lot of what I am telling him..not that it is his fault actually, I often end a conversation with the sinking feeling that I droned on and on which creates a vacuum in a young child's brain..I know this..I remember...

Anyhow, I have to share a story with you that clarified my son's listening skills and made me want to print the event on the front page of the paper.

I recently had to speak at a conference in Niagra Falls, NY and my boys of course, went along for the ride. After a horrible trip of following someone with entirely diffent driving skills, bad weather, missed turns and just bad vibes all around, we arrived at the hotel. We checked in and went up to our room. The boys were just in the middle of changing into their swim suits(read NAKED!) and the fire alarm goes off. Speaking calmly but firmly I dressed the little guy and told N to get dressed as I grabbed our coats from the armoir that I had just hung them in. The sound was deafening as the alarm was directly outside our door. Nathanial got dressed as fast as I dressed his brother(this from a boy who cant seem to ever find his own shoes, let alone put them on, on a good day) and ran to the door of the hotel room to slap both his hands against it before I could get there to announce that it was cold.

I nearly fainted on the spot. This may be a minor thing to you all but we had JUST done a unit on fire safety the Monday of that same week. I felt that I was boring and that he didnt take me seriously when we acted out waking up in our beds and hearing a fire alarm..Walking through it a few times with him and his brother seemed to be a big game to him and I was secretly thankful that we all shared a bed so I wouldnt worry about them having to get out alone. I was so wrong.

Here I was, a writer who always spouts off about how so many parents dont listen or give credit to their kids and yet, I had dont that exact thing with mine.
