Tourette's for attention?

My older son has what I believe to be Tourette's syndrome. He has been to the Dr.'s about it a few times and the Dr. insists that it is all for attention. I have explained to him that if you accidentally walk by my son when he is doing something on his own, he will be doing whatever the particular twitch or *thing* is, with no one watching. He also gets stared at and teased occasionally by other kids. Now, if he is getting teased then I would imagine that he would stop if he could.

Why is it that many adults think children are always out to *fool* them or trying to pull one over on them? I don't mean a teenager who may or may not stretch the truth to cover their butt, I am talking about kids in general. There seems to be such a Us vs. Them mentality and I believe it sets up us for trouble.

I also believe that kids are what we say they are and if they hear that we expect that they are lying or telling us a story then they will lie or tell that story instead of the truth. May be I am not realistic with all of this but I expect someone to take my child seriously despite that fact that he is under the age of 18.

Thoughts?
