Other uses for the TVWe are not a big tv watching family. Although I don't lecture the boys on the heinous quality of most of the choices for channels, I do mention that there are other, more interesting things to do at home that don't include the television. All in all, I would say we watch about an hour a day...not much by today's standards of using tv as background noise. We were lucky enough to have our tv break down a month ago. For the first couple of days, it seemed to be all they could talk about. It was not that they couldn't watch tv that bothered them, it was simply the fact that it was broken. After that initial *cold turkey* period, the television became an expensive dust collector. We also discovered wonderful uses for the blank screen. You may want to take notes here because it is a creative tool and you all have a television I am sure. Turned off television screens make awesome mirrors! We played dress up and checked out our style. We also used it when we danced with abandon to the CD collection that didn't normally get much use. The television screen made a great place to check our form as we discovered new and exciting ways to rock to the 80's. The other fabulous discovery we made during our month without the TV was that it was a wonderfully reflective surface for examining dust in the air as the sunlight bounced off the screen. When your family takes the plunge and turns off the TV, be sure to use the thing as a tool for other activities. It may end up being a worthwile purchase after all.
