Toys for Boys

I am finished shopping for my sons and thought it appropriate to delve into what makes a good toy for a boy.

I realize that toys are an integral part of how a boy perceives himself and the world around him. If he is acting out demon wars between an axe wielding halfling and an acid spitting troll, he is desensitising himself to violence and blending *play* with *fighting*. Purchasing toys that are hyped up on television gives even more power to the media and takes away the opportunity for imagination and spopntanious play.

How about toys with tactile stimulation- wooden or metal or cloth..there is something bland about plastic..not that a toy HAS to be a material other than plastic to be good, Legos come to mind...but if all the toys are brightly colored, plastic and represent a television program, what are we promoting?

I found very few places in real life that offer these *classic* style toys(as wood and metal ones are refered to) I have had good luck with TJ Maxx for creative toys that are not necessarily the Saturday morning line up..

Online is the place for toys that arent directly linked to a Disney movie or television show..I have added some fresh links for ideas..
