In January, residents, environmentalists, and students have set themselves at Mindo Nambillo Cloudforest Reserve to stop construction of Ecuador's new 300 mile pipeline. Many are chaining themselves to the base of the construction and climbing trees to stop the process. Reports were given that police may come and forcibly remove the protestors.
The protestors have insisted that they will remain there. The OCP announced that it would stop work until the end of April when the rainy would stop. The protestors had started going there in September to try to stall for time for the cloud forest. The OCP is mostly upset because they have a 900 million dollar loan in jeopardy in Germany and the protestors could ruin it. NGO experts will testify on how the project violates minimum environmental guidelines set by the World Bank. In recent months, debates about WestLB's role in the project have raged within the Bank and in the State Parliament of NWR, leading to strong denouncements from Green Party members. Atossa Soltani of Amazon Watch wants the loan cancelled immediately. If the pipeline is built, it will bring in around 2.5 million dollars within the next 5 years from oil exploration, drilling, feeder pipelines, refineries, among other things. If the pipeline is built, it would wipe out a whole rainforests, leaving many animals without a home. Most of the animals living there are already endangered. Oil spills may occur because the area that it will be put is unstable and the pipeline will bring new investors which will cause more environmental destruction. It will cause problems for the people that live around there as well. It will increase Ecuador's national debt as well as perhaps causing cancer. Oil producing regions and near refineries has been known to cause cancer and other diseases. Also, civil unrest may cause bombing of the pipeline and other types of violence. Many local communities along the pipe's route make their living on eco-tourism, recreational activities, and scientific communities. The pipeline will cause the destruction of this as there will be no more forest. Construction will also cause increase in diseases, crime, prostitution, rape, deforestation, food shortages and exploitation of natural resources. Protestors are asking for everyones support in helping to stop the building of the pipeline. Going to: http://www.amazonwatch.org/getin/ocp_inv... can help.
