WanderLand Rainforest Sanctuary

Wanderland is a sanctuary that has been set up to teach about the rainforests. Located in the foothills of the Neahkahnie Mountain ridge, it is part of the Lower Nehalem Watershed and borders West Coal Creek. Home to many springs, ponds, and diversities of plant and animal species, it is a great place to learn and to have fun. Some of the animals that thrive in this sanctuary that you may see include the bear, elk, wild cat, coyote, beaver, owl, eagle, heron, dove, hawk, salamander, newt, and frog.

For ten years, Wanderland has been commited to teaching people about the eco-system of the rainforests. They have workshops that consist of native plants and medicinals, mushroom farming. It has been used by elementary, high schools, and colleges to teach students about the rainforests. It is non-profit, non-member association, run by donations and grants. They teach everything from identifying plants and animals to conservation and restoration. Because of their fragile environment, they are only able to take small groups at a time.

You can get a first hand experience living in the rainforest. Between the months of April thru October, you are able to camp out at one of their campsites. These are usually located next to one of the springs or creeks. Some of the classes that are available are Winter Magic at Wanderland, Eco Paper Making, Natural Dyes, and a Fungi Identification Walk.

All together, Wanderland is a great place to go and to learn firsthand all about what makes our rainforests so special. Whether you just want to go to have fun or you want to expand your information about plants and animals, it is a perfect place for young and old.
