Ecology is the science that studies the interactions among living organisms and the relationship between them and it's environment. Ecology can occur anywhere, be it in the rainforest, a park, store, or even in your own home. When you interact with your pets or your children, that is Ecology. In order to make the study of Ecology easier, the Ecosystem was created. The Ecosystem is the smallest unit of Ecology, studying the living organisms of a certain area and how they interact within their environment.
In an ecosystem, a Flow of Energy produces biological structures, as well as a Cycle of Matter between living and non living parts. The flow of energy is essential for the development of all organisms. The Rainforest can be classified as an Ecosystem. Plants and animals coexist and interact with one another to survive. In that forest, there are plants that produces their own food, animals that feed on plants and animals that feed on another animals, then microorganisms feed upon these animals when they die and return them back to the plants. If you remove even one of these things, such as pick one of the plants, it can through the whole Ecosystem into chaos. That is why we must be very careful of our actions. Each Ecosystem consists of a group of levels. The first level is the Trophic level. The Trophic level consists of organisms that can produce their own food. Plants are among the main group of this level, using photosynthesis to turn the sunlight into food. The next level are the herbivores. Herbivores feed upon the trophic level, consuming plants. The next level are the carnivores. The carnivores feed upon the herbivores. The fourth level consist of tertiary consumers. These are carnivores that feed upon other carnivores. The last level consists of decomposers Decomers feed upon the remains of dead carnivores and return the organic matter back to the soil. In each tropic level. energy is used in various activities and released through heat. Because of this, energy doesn't return back to the producers, since photosynthesis used light and not heat. That is why an energy cycle does not exists within an Ecosystem, but an Energy flow can be found. The main elements that occur in organic matter composition are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. These elements pass through the non-living compartments such as water, air and soil and reach living organisms, coming back to non-living compartment after an organisms' death. This makes an Ecosystem much like a food chain. Go To Page: 1 2
