Rhyming Rabbits and Rodents

The Petbunny mail list's Binkyfest 99 - a festival of bunny peace, love and rock 'n roll in the tradition of Woodstock - was a stunning success. Hundreds of bunnies apparently made the trek to enjoy the performances of some of their favorite rabbit rock groups. Lots of fun was had by all with hardly any rowdiness or rioting to spoil the festival spirit.

Maran Fulvi's bun, Wilbee, reported on two of the biggest crowd-pleasers - even including the lyrics of some of the most popular rabbit tunes for the benefit of those who missed out on the event. Talking Ears performed their smash hit, "Chewing Up the House":

Slaves ask themselves,
"Was this my beautiful house?"
Slaves ask themselves,
"Was this my antique rug?"

Silly slaves.
This house belongs to bunnies.
We're chewing up the house!

Wrap those wires, don't you forget
We fit behind the TV set.
Chewing up the house!

Hiding them in little nooks
Won't keep us from shredding books!
We're chewing up the house!

And, of course, no furry festival would be complete without a rousing performance by the Beach Buns, emerging from retirement to perform their ever-popular "Shredding Safari." Hordes of happy hoppers chimed in on the catchy chorus:
Let's go shredding now,
Everybunny's learning how,
Come and shred some phonebooks with me!

Sadly, most bunnies will never record a smash hit song or have a chance to participate in a Binkyfest, but many still find a creative outlet on the Net. My first bun, Esther , occasionally used her Daybook at http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Farm/... to try her paw at some whimsical verses. Here are a few excerpts:

Winter Dream on a Hot Summer Day

Gleaming shards of dangling ice snare the sun,
shattering it into a 1000 colors,
A frozen rainbow shimmers over the snow-carpeted earth,
Waves of arctic cold lap soothingly against my sizzling brain.

Rain
Crows rapping on the powerlines,
"Chirrups" of contented squirrels.
Will it rain today?

Storm
Fall blew into town in an angry mood.
Banging branches hard against the roof.
Nervous squirrels scramble for a safe haven from its fury.
While helpless windows shudder and shake with fear.
Hey, Toto, I think we're not in summer anymore!

Heat
Black fur bleached brown in the sun's white light.
Eyelids drooping under the heavy heat.
Wilted rabbit on a dog day afternoon.

Summer Shower
The heat breaks like a pitcher of ice water
knocked off the table by a playful pup;
Shattering and splattering cool showers on the sleeping cat below.
An unexpected treat!
OK, Esther was a bit obsessed with the weather. But she was also occasionally inspired by other subjects:
