Quilt Binding: How to Sew a Single Fold Binding with No Mitered Corners

© Jeanne Walsh

Quilt Binding and the Mitered Corner offer tips on mitered corners, but there is another binding technique that is both neat and serviceable. This is a single fold binding sewn on in four separate pieces.

How to Sew a Single Fold Binding
  1. Measure the completed quilt through the center both ways, top to bottom, and side to side.
  2. Baste around the edge of the quilt. This will help keep the edges from rippling.
  3. Cut binding 1 1/2 inches wide on the lengthwise grain (parallel to the selvage). Join any short lengths on the bias as in the article given above.
  4. Press the bias seams. Fold the binding strips in half, wrong sides together and press.
  5. Open the strip and press each edge in to meet in the center on that folded line. Carefully measure and cut strips of binding to fit the sides first.
  6. With raw edges even, right side of strip facing right side of quilt, stitch binding to the quilt on the outer folded line, being careful not to stretch either binding or quilt edge.
  7. Flip binding strip to the back of the quilt and blind stitch down. This binding should begin and end even with the top and bottom of the quilt.
  8. Measure and cut strips of binding to fit the ends of the quilt plus 3 inches. When you apply the binding to the end, leave 1 1/2 inches extending on each end to wrap around the raw edge and tuck back under as you blind stitch the ends.
  9. Place some tiny stitches to close the ends of the binding.
The double fold binding does wear longer than this single version. Another simple binding is to allow extra fabric all the way around on the back for the final trim. This extra fabric is folded over the raw edge of the front and stitched down. Be sure to sew through all the layers when doing this "edge turned binding" on a sewing machine. This turned edge is not as sturdy as a regular bound edge.
