GRADUATION QUILTS

And, you ask, what is a graduation quilt? A quilt you give to someone who is graduating from - - - anything! In our case it was high school. A few years ago when granddaughter number one was a senior in high school, her mother suggested we make a quilt for her to take to college and give it to her at graduation time. Granddaughter Liz chose the pattern and the fabric. Susan, her mother, and Marion, her other grandmother, did the piecing and I did the handquilting.

This, Colorado Star, is the pattern Liz chose, but in her quilt, the star is dark red, and the rest of the fabrics are blues and greens. The photo shown is a Christmas wall hanging I made with this pattern.

Aaron liked these log cabin variations and he asked for a large center star in beige, tans, and the rest in blues.

We made the backs for each of these quilts from dark blue 45 inch fabric.

When time does not allow for handquilting, machine quilting can be done. I machine quilted the one for another grandson who will graduate this coming June. I did a Rail Fence with bright red and dark blue as the dominate colors, and used the WalMart 2000 fabric for the borders. The back of this one is a lovely mottled blue that I found on the website, Fabric Loft of New England

(Incidently, the Fabric Loft has a great selection of backing fabrics, not that I am commercially connected!. They sent several samples with my order for the mottled blue.)

Jesse has seen his quilt but it will be kept on the shelf until his graduation.

The graduation quilt can be any size from wall hanging to king. Liz and Aaron wanted theirs a little smaller than regular bed size so those two are about 72 x 86. I made the Rail Fence 88 x 98 and that was some fun pushing that monster through the sewing machine.

Only 2 to 3 months til June graduation. Still time to make a quilt for that special high school or college senior.
