Hello,
Babies and quilts go together. A new baby coming, means a reason (like anyone needs one!) to make a new quilt. I thought I was done with having grandchildren. My oldest daughter's son just turned 15, and my youngest daughter's youngest is nearly 4, and she can't have anymore. Surprise, surprise, surprisee! My oldest daughter is due any day with a new grandson. Why have I waited so long to get busy on a new baby quilt? Maybe shock, maybe so many patterns, so many wonderful fabrics I haven't been able to choose! Baby-day is nearly here, so here I am struggling with finishing one. Back in the dark ages it was so hard to find a cute quilt for a little boy. Now there are almost as many as for girls, and many for both. Baby quilts are also the perfect personalized gifts. Perfect for a new quilter to learn on and get her feet wet. Also a quick small project.
What did I finally choose? An easy quick one, but very cute. I used a selection of fat quarters from KP Kids collection of wild colors, prints, stars, dots and squiggly lines. The pattern was in Quilters Newsletter,July/August, 2005, called Farmers Daughter. It is a churn dash. I put a star applique in the center of each one. I basically followed the directions, hand appliqued the stars, then machine buttonholed them. One day to cut and assemble, and one day to quilt. Of course this is with the *help* of 5 othegrandkidsds, so it wasn't totally uninterrupted.
I nearly made a cute animal quilt from the book of Patchwork Animal quilts by MarcDalbeybShurtleffeff, by American school of Needlework. It is an older book, but I have seen it for sale on used lists, and Ebaybay.
There are so many darling kid prints out today. Several years ago I started collecting as many kid prints as I could. Some I bought, some I received through fabric swaps. I love them all, they make me laugh. Imagine how a child would love to fall asleep looking at all the cute prints. Some are for special interests, such as a variety of sports. Some are cutesy, and some are just plain funny. I have a wonderful selection my daughters bought me for my birthday. One is of VW bugs, one has a bigharleysleys, one of pigs flying! I think that was one of my most treasured gifts. They put thought into that and paid attention to what I was collecting. I come from a background of *matching* my fabrics. Now I have more fun just going wild with the colors, and the patterns. Of course that is for the kids (and me!) I don't know thatdhy dh would appreciate sleeping under a wild quilt. Then again, maybe he just needs to be educated!:)
