New Ways to Applique

You'd think, from glancing at my sewing room book shelves, that I would never need another quilt book. Surely all the quilt wisdom in the world can be found in those dozens of quilt books. I promised my husband months ago that I would not buy any more BOOKS!

Well, I lied. - - - An ad came in the mail from House of White Birches of Big Sandy, TX, for this book and snared me; yes, the glossy color pages caught me and I was hooked again. I have been collecting fabric, FQs, scraps, whatever, for Baltimore Album blocks that I dream I will someday attempt. The book advertised, New Ways to Applique, promised to illustrate the use of new products that speed up the applique process. I sent in the card for a look-see at the book, and it arrived this week.

I found it to be very attractive, hard cover, 176 pages, all in color. The illustrations of the projects are all actual quilts, not the computer-generated type. The projects have good printouts of the sections, units, and subunits of each block with line patterns for the applique motifs.

The book is divided into 4 sections: I. Lullaby & Good Night - 10 baby and children's quilts. II. Home for Christmas - 8 Christmas projects III. Cozy Comforts - 9 quilts IV. Picture Perfect - 8 small projects, wall hangings, flowers, plants, stained glass.

Skill levels are clearly indicated on each project, and range from beginner to intermediate.

Uses of certain products, such as Steam-A-Seam 2, different types of adhesives, and fusible webs, are given within the directions for each project. The editors say, "Of course a product or technique that is 'new' to one quilter may not be 'new' to the next quilter, but we think even the most experienced among you will find some new techniques or products to try."

They add, "We realize that not everyone has tried all the old, familiar methods for applique, so we included designs that demonstrate many of these techniques as well, so this book will include as many different applique techniques and products as possible."

The editors, Jeanne Stauffer and Sandra Hatch, give thanks to the several excellent designers whose works appear in the book. A special listing of suppliers is also included.

I may not get Baltimore Album type blocks started this winter, but I'm sure I'll do some of the projects in this book.

You will use and enjoy New Ways to Applique whether you are a beginner or an old hand at applique. Price $23.97
