Purebred Dogs: Welcome!

© Nancy McMillan

Welcome to the Purebred Dogs column! To have made it this far you must, at the least, be thinking of dog ownership and at the most, may already have a number of titles to your credit. I am currently undertaking the raising of a Kerry Blue Terrier in a manner that exposes her (what I really mean is "us") to all the dog activities out there. To that end, I plan to keep subscribers a breast of our accomplishments and of what we learn along the way. It is my thought that other dog owners may be intrepidity considering entering the world of pure bred dogs and would profit from the experiences that Maggie and I undergo.

The most fun you can have owning a dog is doing things together. It's your choice to earn titles or not; it's all up to you and your dog. How to attend a Dog Show; What does Obedience have to do with it?; the World of Conformation; and eventually Puppies for Sale (winter '98) will be my content once a month. I will also commit to update my reference list of web sites regularly. I welcome comments or suggestions for new endeavors.

Dogs are not just for Christmas. I read that on a bumper sticker and it has stayed with me for years. This issue of my column was meant to deal with this topic. If you are thinking of giving a puppy this year stop and consider.... first, as to whether the recipient really has the time for a pet and secondly, what pet matches the potential owner. Both will benefit from the decisions you make now.

People benefit from pet ownership. I am convinced that the quality time I am spending with my dog will bring me good things in my lifetime. I already feel the benefits of lower stress, not to mention the fact that there is ALWAYS someone who is happy to see me ANYTIME. As for new challenges, there are Obedience titles to earn and Conformation points to collect. Stay tuned!
