Who are they for?
You probably are aware of the initials: CKC or AKC. Most purebred dog owners received "papers" along with their dog. There are a number of parent organizations that over see the "registration, preservation and promotion" of recognized breeds. I have recently joined the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) and by doing so undertook to uphold a rigorous set of ethics. Other Kennel Club sites to visit:
National Kennel Clubs are the parent bodies that sanction many of the Breed Specific Clubs. For a variety of these clubs check out the list at DogsUK. As well as being a CKC member, I also belong to the Kerry Blue Terrier Club of Canada and the US Kerry Blue Terrier Club. These are breed-specific clubs that provide quarterly publications with interesting articles, events and results. They bond breed owners together by making current, newsworthy information available to owners of the breed. Some of it is gossipy, some health related, all of it interesting! Local level breed clubs tend to be where the action is - shows, picnics, grooming session, special events. They offer a chance to meet with other owners of your breed. Look for these clubs on your breed's web page. Here is a sample I found The Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle which has pictures posted of their Fun Walk, Seminar, Bulldog Bash. Friendship, mentorship, and new contacts make these clubs more rewarding the more involved you become! Ever been a ring steward? Tried to take a group photo of 30 squirming dogs and owners? Put six grooming tables up in your garage? Get involved --it can be quite rewarding!
