We're just back from a short visit to The Big Bar guest ranch by BC's
Fraser River. Yes, it was cold but one of the most dog friendly places
I've visited. Here the main rules were that your dog must NOT chase
the horses and must get along with the other dogs. The other dogs
consisted of 4 Border Collies, 1 rottie, and 1 golden. The
accommodations where dogs would be welcome were great and, of
course, camping is always an option. There was no snow to speak of
yet but winter activities included snow shoeing and cross country
skiing. Rosie and I settled for some easy hiking enjoying the fantastic
scenery.
Winter vacationing with your dog may provide you with more options than during regular high season. Generally, lower visitors allow flexibility in dog-related rules. The Working Dogs Book Store has a great listing of publications where much of the research has been done. As long as you take some cold weather precautions like: Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when she comes in out of the rain, snow or ice. Check her sensitive paw pads, which may bleed from snow or ice encrusted in them. Also, salt, antifreeze or other chemicals could hurt your dog if she ingests them while licking her paws. This tip and others can be found covered by the ASPCA's list (ignore the first two tips they are about cats) of many cold weather concerns which can be easily remedied with a little owner forethought. So consider packing the dog too on your next winter adventure.
