Would you send your dog to New York? I did not set out to send my dog on a trip across North America. It all started because I wanted her to have puppies. My plan seemed simple at first: get a female dog, demonstrate it had a desirable personality through attaining an obedience award, pick a mate, enjoy the ups and downs of raising puppies, keep one of the offspring. Boy, did I have a lot to learn!
Luckily, I had a breeder who was happy to steer me onto the path of responsible breeding. First I learned that "we don't breed for pet stock, we breed to better the breed." To make Maggie, the Kerry Blue Terrier, eligible for breeding in this purebred world, we needed to attain her Canadian Championship in confirmation trials. This would demonstrate that she embodied the desirable physical form of her breed. We did this. Second, I learned that before going any further, there were medical tests that would detect undesirable hips and a blood test to ensure she was clear of diseases. Then given that all was "good," and it was, the father needed to be chosen. This proved to be the most important aspect since the "right" combination of genetic material would include a number of known factors. A suitable mate would possess some of the same lineage. This is where the trip to New York became important. Now my dog has been to New York, though I haven't, making her one of the international jet set and in an unfortunate turn of events the puppies are not to be- this time. Go To Page: 1
