The Misfits "Static Age"

A review of Static Age.

Finally, Misfits fans get to enjoy the complete recording session from this classic line up of the band.

I've been a Misfits fan from the minute my ears were treated to the opening riff of "Walk Among Us" nearly ten years ago. I went out and bought everything I could find from the group, which really didn't amount to much at the time. The singles were very rare and highly sought after at the time, but I was able to track down several bootlegs and a few of the records still in print at the time. These days, it's not too hard to find a complete collection of The Misfits discography with the box set being released several years ago, but it was a joy to hear this record, regardless of how many times these songs have graced my ears.

I've always preferred this line up of The Misfits to the others. Sure, I still love the anthemic power of "Walk Among Us" and the eerie, thrash of Earth A.D. But, to me, nothing quite compares to this dirty, 50's-esque ensemble. No band since has been able to recreate the driving, pop of this line up, infusing just the right amount of melody and feedback to produce such a catchy batch of songs.

The songs on this "new" album were originally released on the "Bullet" ep, the "Beware" ep, and the "Legacy of Brutality" collection. But now, you get to hear them all in a row, straight from the same recording session. You'll also be treated to a "new", never released before, song: "In the Doorway". Of course, for Misfits fanatics like myself, this is a very special treat. I've seen a million bootlegs of Misfits recordings over the years, and this song was never on any of them. It has remained on the master tapes all these years, unmixed and just waiting for all the fiends across the world to hear.

If you're unfamiliar with this line up of the Misfits, you can expect something a little different that you're used to. Sure, Glenn still mixes the influence of Elvis, Morrison, and Orbison into his vocal approach. His voice has always been unmistakable. But, the band is just a little different than what you'll hear on "Walk Among Us" or "Earth A.D." First of all, it must be said that Franche Coma could do what no other Misfits guitarist could do. He really could play, in a style all his own. He mixes the classic influence of surf guitarists, blues players, and early rock 'n roll pioneers into a feedback drenched, melodic assault. You will be familiar with the riff in "Come Back", but it won't sound like you've ever heard it before.
