Using Cross stitch patterns for punchwork

As I was experimenting around (as usual) I had a brainstorm- why not use cross stitch patterns for punchwork? How??

You can use the Aida cloth that comes for cross stitching- just follow the chart, using your punchneedle to make one punch for each 'x'.

You can also use the cross stitch charts without the Aida cloth.

IMPORTANT- you will be punching from the back, so you have to have the design backwards, too- easiest way? Run it through your scanner, flip it, print it out, or take it to the local copy store and tell them you need a reverse image.

Get some of the waste canvas- ask at your friendly local needlework shop, or at JoAnn's. Waste canvas comes in the same sizes that Aida cloth does.

Baste your waste canvas onto the back of the fabric you want to put your design on. Then just follow the chart. When you are through, you can pull the waste canvas out from under the punched work. Some waste canvas comes out easier if it gets wet. It will not hurt your punch work to get wet- it will depend on the fabric you punched on whether you want to get that wet or not.

If that is too much 'work' you can still use cross stitch designs-

put the reversed design under your fabric, holding it to a light source, trace the design onto the back of your fabric. Then punch as usual.

If your fabric is too dark, trace the reversed design onto a thin interfacing then baste the interfacing onto the back of your fabric.

Whenever you are using interfacing, baste it down really good, and just leave the basting stitches in, because the punchwork will cover them up.
