What? Thinking of Christmas already? Yes- I have to, if I even dare dream I will actually get through with things on time!

While corresponding with Terrie from Punch Impressions, I got to thinking about painting with my punchwork. I have a LOT of ideas, and I will be sharing them with you later, but as I was working on this free project for you all, I was struck with the 'paint it' bug!!

This is a small project, that you can do with what you probably already have around the house. When finished, you will have holly leaves and berries, ready to applique onto any item of your choice- a Christmas stocking, an apron, a table runner, or a small bellpull style wallhanging.

These instructions are for the Ultra Punch needle settings. Adjust accordingly for your needle.

You need:

2 skeins of DMC floss in medium green 3 skeins of DMC floss in dark green 1 skein of DMC floss in a holiday red 1 skein of DMC floss in a darker red ground fabric - I use weaver's cloth hoop punchneedle that can handle 6 strands of floss plain paper scissors pencil Any glue that is for fabric and that can be washed if you are going to use these on a washable item.

you can use any threads you want for this, I just used DMC, because that was what I had at the house.

Take the plain piece of paper, fold it over, and draw the outline of half of a holly leaf on it.

Cut the patterns out (like making paper dolls!).

Take your ground fabric, and trace the leaf pattern onto it, using a regular pencil. Remember, you will be punching on this side, so it doesn't matter if the pencil line shows. After tracing the leafs, take a quarter and trace around it for the berries.

For the darker leaf, outline with the lighter green floss, for the lighter leaf, outline with the dark green floss.

Outline your leaf patterns, using your needle set at #1.

For the big leaf: After outlining, set your needle at #6 and do the veins inside the leaf, using the same thread you outlined with.

For the smaller leaf: After outlining, set your needle at #4 and do the veins inside the leaf, using the same thread you outlined with.

Switch your thread to the correct filler color for the leaf you are doing, and go all the way around the inside 2 times on a setting of #2.

For the big leaf: Then go around the rest of the leaf, filling in half of the empty space with your needle at setting #4. Then finish the rest of the space with setting #6.
