VINTAGE PUNCHWORK DISCOVERED

I was looking around on eBay, and I found this unique little punchwork item!

The work is about 15 inches by 10 inches. It is done on a red violet velveteen fabric, which has amazingly held the needlepunch stitches really well, considering that the artist did not use any type of glue at all on the back to secure the stitches!!

The work is done with lightweight knitting yarn! YES!! Knitting yarn! Proving (once again) that this artform of punchneedle embroidery is versatile, functional, and completely affordable for all.

Some of the stitches are coming out in the back, but very few. All in all, this work has really held up very well. The different colors on the leaves are actually done with different shades of green yarn, The stems are done with only one line of punchwork.

The flowers are also done using different colored yarns. They do not have an outlined form, by that I mean they were not outlined with one color then filled in.

As for the chicks, the wings, the beaks and the little feet were done with a darker color yellow than the body was. But here is something unusual! The eyes are colored in with a dark pen!! When I saw that, I immediately thought of Terrie's work with the painting of the fabric alongside the punchwork. Here is her site, you can see the paints there- http://hometown.aol.com/terriel/needlecr...

I am anxious to try doing some punchwork and painting highlights on the punchwork itself. Have any of you tried that? Would you please let me know? libbym@adelphia.net

I hope you enjoyed my sharing the little treasure I found on eBay. Those of you on the mailing list know that I always send a note along to let you know when I see anything interesting for sale on there!

For those of you who are not on the mailing list, please consider joining, as it is the best way to know when a new article is being put up here on the Suite101 site.

Soon I will be sharing some projects I will be doing.
