A visit with Terrie from Punch Impressions
Terrie Hi Libby and all you punchneedle enthusiasts! I am really happy to be here today, and talk about using fabric paints with your punchneedle work. I love doing the Punch Embroidery and Fabric Paints together. It gives punchneedle work a dimensional look that I think is great. When you want to Paint and Punch a design, you must do the punching first, then do the painting. Libby Excuse me, Terrie, but why? I thought I should paint the background first! Terrie Well, Libby, the reason for this is that you have to put the fabric in a lip lock hoop in order to punch. If you painted your design first, the hoop would be crushing your paint. So always do the Punch work first. Libby Oh! That makes perfect sense, why didn't I think of it? LOL! Good thing we have you expert punchers around here in cyberspace to help us with the details, and to save us from making mistakes! So after I punch my design, then do the painting, I am good to go? Terrie Not yet- after your design is finished you will want to heatset the paint - you can do this by throwing it in the dryer (alone-no wet clothes) for 20 minutes. This will heatset your design and when your ready to wash it, it will not wash off. Easy and great! Libby Terrie has uploaded a picture for us to see, too- if you click on the picture, it will take you to another page where you can see it bigger. Terrie I have brought a butterfly with flowers to share today. The flowers are painted and the butterfly is punched. This is done a bit different from the way I described above, because this was done on a T-shirt. You iron the pattern onto the T-shirt. Then paint the flowers, let them dry completely. Don't forget to reverse the pattern when you iron it on your 'ground' fabric for punching- because punching is done on the backside. The butterfly was punched on a separate piece of fabric (weaver's cloth). Then the glue was applied to the backside to lock and seal the stitches in. The design was cut out and appliqued in position of the butterfly design. Very easy, and a great eye catcher for the dimensional look.
