Hi everybody! Hope you are all having a great summer, with lots of rest and time to be
creative!
One of the reasons I like using punchneedle is that there is such freedom! You can use so many different fabrics, so many different threads!! I have punched on velvet, rayon, silk, cotton, muslin, satin, and tapestry fabric that was intended to cover seat cushions! I love to do crazypatch work, so I use a variety of fabrics. I don't care much for weavers cloth, I have used it, but I personally like to use a good quality muslin. If you want to do something fun, you can punch a design on a bluejean shirt! OR you can punch a design around the bottom of bluejeans to give a designer look. With a thinner cloth, you just need to make sure you use a stabilizer, or make your punch design on a sturdier fabric, and applique it to the item where ever you want it. As for threads, I use DMC floss for almost everything. It is very inexpensive, it is readily available, and there are SOOOOOOOO many colors. I have also used small baby size crochet yarn, crochet thread, metallic threads, perle cotton, and silk thread! How do you know which thread to use with what size needle? Well, first look at the thread, and look at the size of the holes in the needle. Try to pick a hole that looks a little bit bigger than your needle eye. Thread the needle- does the thread flow freely through the eye of the needle, or does it move some, then stop, and you have to pull harder to get it through? If you are having to really tug on it, then the thread is too big for that size needle. How about vice versa- thread to small for the needle? If you have thread in your needle, and when you punch the thread is coming right back out of the fabric, then your needle is probably making a hole that is tooooo big! You need to move down a size needle wise, or double your thread! Thank goodness a smaller size needle for the Ultrapunch has been invented, so now we can use one strand ofthread, just like the original Russian Punchneedles!!!!! More info will be coming about that soon! There are sometimes conflicts in the instructions you get- depends on where you get them. Did you know some people say you have to hold the punchneedle with the needle pointing away from you only, and others say you absolutely must hold it sideways!! I have Go To Page: 1 2 |
