Why Testing isn't the answer


the FCAT. Some people argue that the FCAT skills tested are teaching critical thinking skills. But what about the skills and lessons that could have been taught reading To Kill a Mockingbird? And the irony of all of this hoopla? Since the 1950s experts have been insisting new methods be instituted because of failing public schools. So every few years a new test is brought out and tried and then everyone goes back to being complacent. If we are teaching our students history in order for them not to repeat the mistakes of the past, then why don't we apply the same standards to the very institution that proclaims to put children first? If we truly put children first, we would care more about what they have learned and less about how they take a test.
