Vaccine Safety In QuestionRecently it has been learned that increased problems are occuring becuse of vaccines. While the following are isolated, independent incidents, they tend to show a pattern of vaccine induced illnesses that is alarming. The cause of these incidents is unknown, but obviously, further research into them is warranted. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found a link between an outbreak of polio in China, that seemed to be related to the Salk Vaccine. The December issue of the Journal of Virology reports that a type 1 wild-vaccine recombinant poliovirus spread across a large portion of China. Researchers from the CDC were called in to assist with the investigation of this outbreak, and found the link, which spread the virus over ten provinces. In a separate vaccine related incident, the Canadian government reported that over 1,100 people became ill after being given the flu vaccine, Fluviral. Those affected had respiratory symptoms, as well as swollen eyes and throats. Fluviral is one of two vaccines being used on the general population this flu season in Canada. Across the Atlantic, Irish authorities reported that polio vaccine given to the public by Irish health officials was tainted. Reports from Ireland indicate that while there is no danger to the public health, the vaccine was produced using blood from a donor who had CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease of unknown cause). This vaccine was administered to children as part of a polio prevention program. For the purposes of this article, the final report indicates that a mutated polio vaccine has infected people in the Dominican Republic and Hatti. The vaccine has caused the first outbreak of polio in the western hemisphere since 1991. The event is almost a duplicate of an outbreak in Egypt in 1993 that infected over 30 people. While each of these cases happened outside of the United States, the trend toward defective vaccines being delivered to the public is cause for concern. For years, opponents of vaccination have stated that vaccines cause more problems than they solve, and these examples tend to support that belief. In fact, the problem with vaccines has become so bad that even medical associations have begun to question the risk - benefit ratio of many of the common vaccines given around the world. In fact, the problem has become so severe that some countries, such as the United Kingdom have begun to compensate victims of vaccine related illnesses, and even the United States has a Vaccine Injury Compensation program. Certainly, in light of these events, more research is needed by the CDC and NIH in the area of vaccine safety.
