Recalls for August, 2000© Adelle Vancil Tilton

It's the last week of August and it's time to review the recalls for the month. As usual, there are a lot of them and although I can only give you some of the highlights, I do encourage you to research more thoroughly to find ones that could be applicable to your life. Some are serious, some are annoying and some are life threatening.
My primary interest in recalls, for the purpose of this column, are the drugs and medicines that people use. Many people are turning to alternative medications and there are several on the list this month that have been recalled. New Life Colostrum Cream, a product used by many women for alternative health care, has been recalled due to microbial contamination.
"Dream On" Sleep Aid, which is a new product designed to help with sleep, enhance sexual activity, improve physical endurance and widely used recreationally, has been recalled because of the inclusion of a non approved drug product called GBL (Gamma-Butyrolactone).
Tricana, a new food supplement that is reported to assist in the treatment in obesity was recalled also for containing a non approved drug substance called tiratricol (Thyroid Hormone).
In the prescription and over-the-counter drug market there have been several recalls as well. Cortef Oral Suspension has been recalled by the manufacturer as it is proving to not always be effective in the treatment of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Orasone 5 Tablets have also been recalled by the manufacturer due to dissolution failure.
Marquee Brand Menthol Sore Throat Spray was voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer due to a batch missing the tamper proof seal.
Rich's MSM Eye & Ear Drops have been recalled by the manufacturer after a warning by the FDA that the product contains yeast and Pseudomonas fluorescens - a bacteria that can cause severe, and in rare cases sight-threatening, eye injuries. Patients who have used this product, especially in the eyes, are urged to contact their physicians immediately.
Estratab, a popular hormone replacement drug, has been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer after it was discovered that the drug did not meet friability specifications.
Pannaz Tablets, an antihistamine/decongestant has been recalled by the manufacturer because of a lack of manufacturing process validation.
Clinipad Sterile Alcohol Pads have been recalled by the manufacturer due to a lack of assurance of sterility.
There are many other recalls which affect many people in their everyday lives. Children's products, food products, automobiles and more have made the August list.
Kids Line Inc., has recalled 46,000 Le Cradle bassinets after a three month old infant suffocated in a gap in the construction of the bed.
Gel Pens by Colorbok have been recalled as an extra spring has been included in the mechanism which can fly out of the pen, causing potential eye injury.

Isn't that a great word? But when applied to recalls, not so great. I don't think it's deliberate. I think "things happen" and sometimes it is human error, sometimes machine error and sometimes jus ...
