My last article of each month will feature a list of product recalls that pertain to Public Health. This will mainly be covering medications but other items in the interest of public health will also be addressed. I feel this is important, as so many of us depend on these products and if they are recalled, for whatever reason, all of us need to know.

In July of this year, 17 medications were recalled by a variety of pharmaceutical companies. One of the ones that could be a potentially serious problem was Lanoxin, a cardiac medication used for several different heart conditions. This product was recalled because of "product thickness" and therefore may not have the amount of medication in each pill that should be present. This recall affects consumers who reside in California, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Hawaii and Maine. However, if you have a bottle of Lanoxin purchased recently, and do not reside in one of these states and would feel more comfortable with a replacement, do not hesitate to go to your pharmacy. They will undoubtedly understand and replace the medication.

Glyburide Tablets were also recalled by the manufacturer. This is a medication used for non-insulin dependent diabetics. The drug was recalled due to "blend uniformity failure" and the recall is nationwide. If you have a bottle of Glyburide, return it to your pharmacy as soon as possible for a replacement.

On July 18, the FDA reported that BASF corporation is recalling certain brands of Ibuprofen. This recall is due to product impurity specifications at the 18 month stability. Nearly 10,000 bottles, nationwide, are involved in this recall, so check your Ibuprofen and be sure of the manufacturer. If it is a BASF corporation product, return it to the store that you purchased it from.

Three different brands of aspirin were also recalled by Leiner Health Products. This aspirin was recalled due to dissolution failure. Again, check the manufacturer of your aspirin products and if they are from Leiner Health Products, return them to the store.

Respironics Inc. has recalled its Healtydyne SmartMonitor series of Infant Apnea Monitors due to possible damage to electrical circuit. These products are used to monitor the breathing of infants, and an electrical failure could be potentially fatal. This recall involves all type 3A and 3B SmartMonitors Infant Apnea Monitors manufactured between 12/1/95 to 1/15/2000.

In summary there are many, many products which could cause potential risks to your health and/or safety that are recalled each month. This is only a partial list for products recalled in July 2000. If you have one of the products listed here, you should follow the instructions included with the recall notice or return the product to its place of purchase. Your health and safety depend on it.
