P-movies Dominate B.O.

Psychotronic movies have dominated the box-office this weekend. The Sixth Sense came in first place, with Blair Witch close behind, and Pretty Woman 2 aka The Runaway Bride in a not disappointing third. The Thomas Crown Affair seems like it could qualify as a P-movie, especially due to it being a premise used often. You might have seen it when it was packaged as Entrapment. The fifth placed movie, Deep Blue Sea, seems to be Jurassic Park meets Jaws, with LL Cool J trying to be the next Will Smith.

The Sixth Sense has been receiving mostly positive reviews from critics, despite the laughable TV promo with the Haley Joel Osment pleading, "Can you make them stop?" and Bruce Willis answering, "I'm working on it." Columnist Jeffrey Wells said it's a creepy movie that's likely to appeal to female audiences, rather than your typical horror movie audience because the horror doesn't start until about an hour into the movie. Roger Ebert calls the young Haley Joel Osment a very good actor, while Mr. Showbiz critic Kevin Maynard describes his performance as "campy."

Apparently a backlash is forming against this summer's surprise hit The Blair Witch Project. According to polls conducted, out of 600 people who were looking forward to seeing the movie, 60 percent ended up giving the film a C. Two of the biggest factors that seem to influence ratings given to the movie are age and pre-knowledge of the film. The hype around the movie may begin to die down a bit. Especially if people continue to get sick due to the shaky camera.

Tidbits

Ridley Scott is set to direct Hannibal. Jodie Foster has said she won't commit to starring until she has read the script.

Warner Brothers, apparently reacting to criticism from its key demographics, reneged its earlier announcement that The Matrix would be available in the sell-through market only on DVD. The DVD, set for release on September 21, will include extras like the movie script, story boards, and special scenes. You can expect to shell out around $25 for it. The VHS release is set for November 26, and contains the "Help! I'm becoming obsolete" price of $15.

Kudos to Joe Bob Briggs for somehow convincing the TNT high sherriffs to allow Charlton Heston's controversial line from Planet of the Apes to air uncensored on Joe Bob's Summer School on Saturday. The line, "God damn you all to hell!" was controversial for the theaters when the movie was originally released and is too controversial for television now. "God damn" is always censored, even on basic cable. Thankfully, I was able to hear Chuck Heston say "Get your filthy hands off me you damn dirty apes!" and finally, condemn the entire human race--the way it was meant to be seen.
