Researching PTC

© Freedom Smith

If you have been looking for information on Psuedo-tumor Cerebri on the Web, chances are you ran into the same problem I did- limited resources. I have compiled a list of links that you can browse to find information, or you can try the following research tips:

ON THE WEB:

1. Remember that there are other names for PTC. Benign Intracranial Hypertension, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension are two of the more common. Try searching under those terms, and you get more information.

2. Try different search engines. HotBot, Yahoo, and Lycos all have powerful search engines to try. Each one comes up with different information. The URL's are: http://www.hotbot.com, http://www.yahoo.com, and http://www.lycos.com. Another good site is Ask Jeeves. The URL is http://www.ask.com.

3. Wade through some articles that seem irrelevent to your search. Search engines search by key words. I have gone through entire sites that only mention PTC once, but it is some new information I've never accesed before. For instance, I discovered a connection between certain birth controls and PTC this way.

4. Don't get too frustrated if you don't come up with anything new. Try again next week, when fresh sites may have been listed.

5. If you run across personal web sites of other people with PTC, send them an e-mail and ask them for links to the best sites they have found.

OFF THE WEB:

6. Don't forget your local library. I have found that my library has limited information on PTC, but they do have a computer that searches by subject and gives listings of other local libraries that carry books or magazines with PTC information. The librarian can have the book sent to my library for me to check out, and it takes about 4 days.

7. Try your local college library. A college library usually is chock full of research material and a wealth of information on the latest information.

8. Join a PTC discussion group, where information can be shared. This is often the best resource, because you get the latest treatment options, how it feels, and how it may affect into your lifestyle.

That's it for now!
