Working and FMLA

© Freedom Smith

In my experience, I have had some difficulties on the job due to my PTC. Occasionally, I get splitting headaches that require a day off, or a spinal tap that takes me away from work for a few days.

My bosses have been understanding to a point, but my fellow coworkers have not. They do not know the details of my condition, all they know is that I miss work sometimes. I try not to worry about what they think, because I have enough stress in my life, but it does bother me sometimes. So, on the advice of my physician, I practice relaxation techniques, mainly yoga. I have found that some of the daily headaches I was getting were tension headaches, and not pressure headaches. It has helped me to cope a little better with my PTC. I recently discovered that I am eligible for what is called FMLA, or Family Medical Leave Act. This program allows me to have the time off that I need, and not be punished for it. I believe you recieve up to twelve weeks, and it can be taken all at once or one day at a time. This is the same program used by women on pregnancy leave. It is a federal program that should be offered to all full-time employees, and if you think you would benefit, you should ask your employer for the paper work. If they don't have the information, ask your Doctor.

The forms are a few pages long, you fill out one, and there are a few for your Dr. to fill out. It is a question and answer type of form, and doesn't take a long time to complete. This is an unpaid leave, though, so be aware of that.
