PTC Treatment Options 2, The Spinal Tap Experience

Spinal taps, or Lumbar Punctures are often used to relieve some of the fluid pressure in Pseudo Tumor Cerebri.

Sometimes, you only have to go through it once, sometimes you may have to have several taps.

It is often frightening to go through the first time, so I have included a basic description of the procedure from my point of view as a patient.

My first spinal tap was done in my bed at the hospital. I had to lay on my side, with my head on a pillow, and my legs curled in a fetal position. My Neurologist performed the procedure. He first numbed the area, then used a long needle which he inserted into my spine. He took two small vials of fluid, which looked like blood.

I felt nothing during the procedure at all. My DR. asked if I wanted a Valium before hand, which I refused. Afterword, when the shot for pain wore off, I felt some pain. It was like bad back aches that come with menstruation, and I was more uncomfortable than in pain.

Different people have different experiences with the procedure, but your Doctor will be able to assist you with any problems or questions you might have.

My second tap was done under fluoroscopy, which means the procedure is done under X-ray. I had basically the same experience the second time as I did the first time. They numbed my lower body, I had to lay flat on my stomach, they used a long needle to take two vials of fluid. The pain was also about the same as the first time.

I have talked to several people who say that they prefer to have their taps under fluoroscopy, and it is an option you can discuss with your physician.
