Sometimes Yearning for SimplicityI didn't ask my wife to buy it, but I was glad she did. Don't get me wrong, I like Rocky Road, Cappuccino Crunch and Strawberry Swirl. If I am not careful I can put a half-gallon of the stuff away in one sitting. But when I opened the freezer and saw the new carton of vanilla -- plain, old fashioned vanilla -- my mouth watered. Until then, I hadn't realized how much I missed it. Sitting in the pews, as I have for nearly 25 years, is much like opening the "fridge stocked with a smorgasbord of scrumptious frozen treats." I've feasted on many tasty morsels in that time: prayer, faith, sin, prophecy, heaven, forgiveness, hell, God's providence. How I have loved each savory syllable. Cappuccino Crunch never tasted so good. But every once in a while, when the pastor opens to a text like John 3:16*, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life," my heart quickens . . . reminding me how much I sometimes miss plain old vanilla.
