Just over a year ago, I wrote an article about the birth of a white buffalo on the Heider farm in Wisconsin in 1994. White buffalo are extremely rare. You can read that story here:
According to legend, the birth of such a buffalo is a promise of a coming time of global unification and peace. Since that time three more buffalo were born in 1995. One died shortly after birth. A fourth was born in 1996 in South Dakota. This made a total of five known white buffalo births. The Native people rejoiced. Then, in March of this year, disaster struck. Rare White Buffalo Shot To Death the headline in the Lincoln Star read. Medicine wheel, born May 9, 1996, had been shot on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Unrest already troubled the Reservaytion because of other problems. The shooting of the buffalo only added fuel to the fire. Tribal police found the white buffalo on the road. When they tried to chase it home, it turned and charged. The officers shot the animal because they feared for the safety of the community. "The buffalo's death is a sign that life for American Indian people will get worse before it gets better," said Looks for Buffalo of Grassroots Oyate. The buffalo's hair and bones will be used for religious purposes, promisesd its owner, Joe Merrival. The rest of the remains will be interred in the pasture where the buffalo was born.
