Medicine Cards

I doubt that many of you have heard of Jamie Sams. She is a member of the World Teaching Lodge and co-author of many books on Native American prophecy and beliefs. She is also the originator, along with David Carson, of the Medicine Cards. Jamie Sams is a writer and artist of Seneca, Cherokee and French descent, and her Medicine Cards have gained popularity in many countries.

The Medicine Cards are used in the same way as Tarot cards, with specialized layouts. Each card has its own meaning, depending on its position in the layout and whether it appears right-way-up or reversed. But the cards are based on Native wisdom and the special magic of the animal kingdom.

The animals on the cards vary from the emperors of the sky like eagles and hawks, to the deer family and the dog (wolf, coyote) family. Some members may surprise you, like bats, spiders and hummingbirds. The bat is the symbol for rebirth, the spider weaves the patterns of life, and the hummingbirds are the hummers that send out vibrations of joy.

The illustrations were done by Angela C. Wernekek, and these cards are works of art. The animal and Native American symbols have been created with great care. The cards can be purchased from most New Age bookstores, and even the major bookstores have them in stock. But for a selection of all the books and cards, check out Jamie Sam's Home Page.

If you would like to see a sample of the cards and experiment with what they say, try the Serenity Health Page. A new addition to Medicine cards is a prototype of a CD-Rom with a Native Guide to lead you through your own personal layout.

The Sacred Path Cards are similar to the Medicine Cards, but are based, not only on animal wisdom, but also on other Native symbolism.
