My Father's Hands

© Florence Cardinal

A farmer's hands. Fingertips
Dusted with chaff.
Steering John Deere in endless circles.
Hands coaxing one more crop
From sun-burned soil.

A mechanic's hands. Fingertips
Scarred and calloused.
Wiping grease on oily rag.
Hands coaxing one more turn
From rusted bolt.

A musician's hands. Fingertips
Tone-sensitized.
Rubbing resin on horsehair bow.
Hands coaxing one more tune
From trembling strings.

My father's hands. Fingertips
Loving and gentle.
Creating magic from scrap lumber.
Hands coaxing one small smile
From a tear-stained face.
