Miracle, White Buffalo Calf

© Florence Cardinal

About twenty years ago, I saw a movie called The White Buffalo. It was a fantasy, and really not all that well done, but it made an impression on me. I can still see this huge white buffalo bursting out of a snow bank, snorting and bellowing.

Years later, I heard the Native American legends about the white buffalo and realized the movie was probably based, very loosly, on those legends.

Buffalo have always been important to the Native Americans. Before the white man came, the buffalo supplied the Indians with meat. The people used the hides in the making of robes, clothing and tepees. The bones became tools, the stomach a pouch for carrying pemmican or water. The rare white buffalo (which were probably albino) were revered animals, worshiped as a gift from the gods.

Many Native American tribes have stories about the sacred white buffalo, about the coming of a white buffalo calf, and about White Buffalo Calf Woman. According to the Lakota, many generations ago, following the Great Flood sent by the Great Spirit, Wakan Tanka, to purify Mother Earth, White Buffalo Calf Woman brought to the people the Sacred Pipe, and taught them the seven sacred ceremonies.

She predicted much of the trouble and strife that currently afflicts our world, the wars, the waste, and the destruction of the Earth Mother. She vowed she would return in the form of a white buffalo calf, and, at that time, peace and harmony among all races would be restored.

The Sacred Pipe still exists and has been passed down from generation to generation. Each generation chooses someone to be Keeper of the Sacred Pipe. The current Keeper is Arvol Looking Horse.

In August 1994, on the Heider farm near Janesville, Wisconsin, a rare white buffalo was born. It is a female and a true white buffalo. It is not an albino! The odds of the birth of a true white female run as high as one in a million. Native Americans swear this is the return of White Buffalo Calf Woman, as she promised. Her return, say tribal elders, predicts a time of global unification and peace.

In 1995, a group of Native Canadians made the long, tiring 1200 mile bus trip from the Frog Lake Reserve in Northern Alberta to Janesville to see the calf,
