The Sleeping Prophet (Updated August 3, 1999)He was called the Sleeping Prophet, and during his lifetime, he gave over 30,000 readings. Edgar Cayce was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky March 18, 1877. There was evidence of psychic abilities in other members of his family. His grandfather was a dowser and was able to find water using a forked branch from a witch hazel tree. His father held a strange attraction for snakes. They followed him all over the farm and even used his clothing as a resting place.
As a child, Edgar often talked to imaginary playmates. He was also able to see auras at an early age. He began attending church and enjoyed reading the Bible. He vowed he would read the Bible from beginning to end once a year, and there is evidence that he was successful in this endeavor. When he was in his early teens, he claimed to have been visited by an Angel who promised to grant him one wish. He asked for the ability to help people. Edgar was not the best scholar in the world. In fact, spelling often frustrated him. One evening, after struggling for some time with his spelling lesson, he fell asleep with his head resting on the book. When he woke up a short while later, he was amazed to realize he could now spell, not just the words in his lesson, but every word in the spelling text. The earliest evidence of the healing ability to come occurred while he was still in school. One afternoon, he was cracked on the back of the skull with a baseball. For the remainder of the day, he seemed a bit dazed. It was never diagnosed, but it is possible he suffered a concussion. When he got home, he asked his mother to prepare a poultice of herbs and onions, and place it on the back of his head. He awoke the next day feeling fine, but with no memory of the hours that had passed since he had been hit with the ball. However his ability to diagnose and heal illnesses was not revealed until he was twenty-one. At that time, he again cured himself, this time of a persistent sore throat. He saw the problem and prescribed the cure while under hypnosis. He discovered he could put himself into a trance state and, while in this state, diagnose and heal all manners of illnesses.
