The moon also governs the growth of plants. For example, any plant that produces its crop above ground should be planted during the time of the new moon. Root plants, however, seem to produce better crops if planted when the moon is Full. Many almanacs include tables and information on the best time for planting various field crops, fruits and vegetables and even flowers, according to the phases of the moon. And, of course, it follows naturally that the moon also dictates the best time for harvesting your crops.
It's only logical, given the moon's control of water, that fish would also be influenced by its waxing and waning. Many a wise fisherman will tell you that fish bite best during the week the moon is new. Again, most almanacs and many calendars carry fishing forecasts and moon calculators.
The moon is also said to be a prognosticator of the coming weather. If the points of the new moon point upward, you can look forward to a month of fine weather. If, however, the points face downward, this is called a "wet moon," so look for a month of rainy weather. A ring around the moon also indicates stormy weather ahead, and, if two new moons fall in the same month, batten down the hatches. Bad weather ahead. These are just a few of the myths regarding the weather.
The term "Moon Madness" is an expression uncomfortably close to the truth. In fact, the word "lunatic" is derived from the Latin word for moon, luna. But whether or not you believe that the moon can cause a person to go mad, the full moon does seem to have an effect on emotional balance. Prison wardens know it's a time of cell block fights, riots and general discord among inmates. Those in charge of mental institutions would be well advised to keep a close watch on their charges, and the wise policeman stays more alert than usual when walking his beat. There may be a few "loonies" wandering the streets.
