Having said all that ... contract time is always a stomach-hurting time for me. I'd rather a professional deal with that rather than worry all the time if I've cut my own throat by signing ... SQ: (Grins) Then, the stomach-hurting should lessen with the new agent! How do you market your books and which ways work best? WD: Besides maintaining an online presence, at the moment, I am relying on word of mouth. If your book is good, the word of mouth does happen. SQ: As a focused writer, what tips can you offer other writers in keeping family ties alive? WD: Life isn't meant to be easy - lol! Seriously, I keep in mind that my family comes first - always. Books can and have been written while your children/spouse are at school or work. It is hard and it takes longer to write - but I personally never want my family to think they come second to my writing. Housework comes second to my writing but not my kids or my husband. They're far too important for that! I admit it feels like juggling balls and sometimes - despite the good intentions - they all end up on the floor. You just do your best to pick them up and start again. SQ: What wonderful advice! So what advice might you give aspiring authors? WD: Persevere, persevere, and persevere. Bestselling author Sandra Gulland once said to me, "Perseverance Furthers" and it is so true. Always believe in yourself. Read good books and good writers. Join a writing group. Enter writing contests - learn to hone your craft and enjoy the editing process. SQ: Is there anything you would like to add to this interview? WD: One of my favourite sayings? "Aim at the sun, and you may not reach it; but your arrow will fly far higher than if you aimed at an object on a level with yourself." -- J. Hawes SQ: Wendy, I got chills from your many wise words throughout our interview. It has been a wonderful honor. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughtful insights! WD: Thank you, Sara!
