Egyptology at Stonehenge

© Arnvid Aakre

Last year I met a small group of friends who used to travel together. They told me about the time they were sitting in an outside restaurant in Paris, looking up at the metal construction in front of them - wondering what it was?

Next year they told me they went to Greece. There they was sitting in an Athenian restaurant drinking Retsina while looking up the hill at a white building with a row of columns in front.
They all wondered what it was...

Two years ago they ended up somewhere in China on a endless wall construction - all wondering what it was.

When I met them last year at Stonehenge they wondered what construction team that had just left their stones around like that. When I told them a bit about the history of Stonehenge they all said "wow". After some pints at the local pub there they told me that I was actually the first who had answered them in a way they could understand.

In Paris the only answer they got was "merde" and a finger, in Greece the restaurant owner started to break all the dinner plates in his restaurants, all while a wedding was going on. In China the locals was nice and gave them a book with lots of pictures of the wall, but unfortunately they could not read the local language.

After three rounds of pints they understood that it was good with history, and that history was not something related to the terrible and boring history teacher they all had shared at school.

Then they said "wow" again, this time a bit higher. Third time they said "wow" all in the pub started to stare at us - the friends did not notice. In unison they said that next year they wanted to go to Egypt, but first they wanted to study the history of Egypt.

The blonde girl in the group first smiled, then looked cunningly around at all the others before she said: "Egyptology, that's what they call it - history of Egypt that is..."

Ordering a new round of pints while saying "last and this round is on me". Then I said: "to be honest, Egyptology is more than history - as you can't really study the history alone as for other cultures". The "submarine" I ordered to the pint of the blonde girl made her gasp and gave me time to explain.
